Centuries have passed and we have got ourselves accustomed to the formal maps to maneuver around the city, in the era of technology, google maps has slowly taken over the very essence of wayfinding and paying attention to a place. Slowly the essence of making your maps to understand the place is diminishing.
Even today urban designers prefer to make a mental map to understand the surroundings, it helps one focus on what one chooses to take into consideration when designing for a city and its people. A mental map is not used exclusively by designers, it is used to understand the usage of space by locals. More they relate to an area, more important it becomes and a better understanding of the bottom-up approach can be incorporated.
To understand how a mental map is made, the 7th semester students read Kevin Lynch’s “image of the city”, the book talks about mental-maps and the public image of a place, with various other concepts. The book is a bible when it comes to understanding the basics of an urban setting.
The students worked on mental maps of their basic commute involved while traveling to the college every day. This made them understand the important routes and landmarks of the city.
